Historical Note
Muirhall Farm has a recorded history stretching back to 1552, when family papers identify it as the home of the Flint family. An estate map dating from 1808 depicts "Moorhall" as a tree-lined property labelled "Dr. Flint's Property", reflecting its long-established place within the rural landscape of Auchengray. It is thought that the present farmhouse was built during the 1820s following the construction of the turnpike road between West Calder, Briech and Ayr. By the time of the first Ordnance Survey in the early 1850s, Muirhall was shown set within sheltered paddocks, much as it is today. The estate later became closely associated with the development of Scotland's pioneering shale oil industry. Following the construction of the Addiewell Oil Works in 1864, the Caledonian Railway crossed the lands of Muirhall to serve the expanding oilfields. In 1867, the mineral rights were acquired by the pioneering industrialist James Young, whose company subsequently purchased Muirhall and Easter Whitesykes. Although the local pits had only a short working life, the estate remained part of this important chapter in Scotland's industrial heritage, with roads and villas for senior oil company officials being constructed nearby in 1880. Today, Muirhall retains the character of a historic Scottish farmstead whose story spans almost five centuries of agricultural and industrial history.
