Scottish Young Farmers Tug of War final shows passion and strength

Beith YFC Gents presented trophy by Niall Milner D&R Director sponsors of the event

The final of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers (SAYFC) Tug of War competition is one of the most exhilarating, high-octane event at the Royal Highland Show.

Sponsored by Davidson & Robertson (D&R) since 2018, it is technique and fitness, rather than the weight of the teams, that determines who wins. Euan Bremner, Chair of SAYFC and a past competitor, said “We are grateful to D&R for their continued sponsorship of this event – including the colourful  shirts that make each teams look the part.”

The event first began forty five years ago and 2026 saw another epic battle of passion, power and skill. It was as challenging and energy sapping as ever, with the final title  in the gents comeptiion taken by Beith & District YFC who fought off a strong team from Lesmahagow YFC who were trying to go one better than their second place from last year.

In the ladies’ competition it was Avondale YFC ladies who took the victory, beating last years winners Strathbogie JAC in the final pull.

The prizes were presented by Niall Milner, Director at D&R, who said, “It is always a fantastic occasion, and one which attracts a huge ringside of support, but behind a few minutes of intense competition lies months of gruelling dedication.

“Talking to the coaches we know that on the day, success requires the perfect alignment of tactics, style, stamina, and resilience. Well done to every club in the finals for executing an unmissable event, and to our 2026 champions: Beith & District YFC Gents, and Avondale YFC Ladies – what a hard fought contest, congratulations on taking the titles this year.”

Alan Brodie, Beith YFC Gents coach said, “It’s about the hard work, determination and always going for gold.  This is the first time in over 40 years that the team has been here, and they are very dedicated – and very young just 17 and 18. They train with the Ayrshire Tug of War team who are aiming to represent Scotland at the British & Irish Championships in Ireland.”

Avondale YFC Ladies coach Matthew Brown has worked with the team for 25 years and said, It’s 19 years since the ladies team were last here and this is the first time they’ve won. The six girls are very committed and very willing to train – and they do so with the Kilmaurs YFC  team who were big supporters today.”

Summing up the day Niall said “Strength and resilience is something these young people displayed in the competition – but it is also these characteristics that will help them navigate the difficult times that farming is facing.  We are very proud to support the SAYFC and our farmers of the future.”
