Tess Gibson passes exams to become the newest Chartered Surveyor at Davidson & Robertson

Passing her professional exams just before Christmas, Tess Gibson becomes Lanarkshire’s newest qualified Chartered Surveyor and a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

A farmer’s daughter from near Biggar, Tess Gibson studied for her Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) whilst working with Davidson & Robertson, the rural surveyors, and consultants with offices across Scotland. She joined D&R as a Graduate Surveyor in 2021 having gained a 2.1 BSc Honours Degree in Rural Enterprise and Land Management from Harper Adams University.

It was a D&R placement year in 2019/20  that introduced Tess to graduate surveyor opportunities and following her successful D&R placement, she was offered a Graduate Surveyor position. Since working with D&R Tess has gained valuable experience across various sectors,  but it is in property management that she is excelling.

Managing a diverse client property portfolio, Tess enjoys the variety the role offers, working with a range of clients from large estates with 60+ properties and 3,000 acres to smaller portfolios with 3 residential properties and 200 acres.

Tess said “I am lucky to work with beautiful estates across the Edinburgh and Lanarkshire and Fife areas, and with clients who have differing goals and visions. Some are keen to maintain tradition and others are looking to develop and grow, that may be finding ways to diversify or build and develop new assets, or simply improve the performance of their existing business.

“I really love the variety, but what excites me most is the opportunity to bring forward ideas for clients to consider as we look to improve their asset value and business productivity.”

Commenting on Tess’s new qualification Niall Milner, D&R Director and head of property & forestry said, “Tess has an excellent eye for detail, ensuring that clients get the best from situations within their portfolio, that match their objectives.

“She works hard for her clients and has really embraced the opportunities and challenges faced by the property management sector. Residential landlords are impacted by ever increasing restrictions and legislation, and the farming sector is still facing uncertainty ahead of new policies.

“As well as the core service of property letting Tess has experience in managing in-hand wind turbines, biomass heating and farming enterprises. Her proactivity is a reflection of our ethos when managing property for others which allows client businesses to succeed.

“Tess has worked hard to juggle the demands of her job alongside studying for her RICS qualification, so we are delighted she attained Chartered Surveyor status in time to start the New Year. She is now working to become a Fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers and the Scottish Agricultural Arbiters & Valuers Association.”

Outside of work, Tess is heavily involved with her family’s commercial sheep farm near Biggar and has a keen interest in developing her flock of pure bred Suffolks.
